Anniversaries are an opportunity to reflect on achievements, recall the past and speculate , and to rethink the tradition of which we are an inseparable part. Most of all, it is an opportunity to consider the idea that everything begins now, from us, and to understand that we are a part of a well-established culture in the space and the society in which we live.
The Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade celebrated “170 Years Of Higher Education In The Field Of Architecture” in Serbia at the Yugoslav Film Archive on the 3rd of November 2016. This event marked the year 1846 as the year when Prince Alexander Karađorđević founded the “Engineering School” at the Belgrade Lyceum – such school title indicated a commitment to the construction industry. Today it is considered to be the foundation of higher education in the field of construction and architecture.

The academic school was established following the French and German models. The Faculty of Architecture today is one of the oldest faculties of Belgrade University and a leading academic institution for studies in the field of architecture and urban planning in the region. Throughout its 170-year history, the Faculty has undergone many stages of development and reform developing into a modern school that offers a comprehensive education for future architects and urban planners. It achieves this through various study programs including interdisciplinary studies and it is the backbone of architectural and urban planning theory and practice throughout Serbia and the region.

The ceremony was opened with a short film that provided an insidght into everyday life at the Faculty. After that an address was given by Dean of the Architectural Faculty, Dr Vladan Đokić, followed by the President of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts professor Dr Vladimir Kostić. Further address was given by professor Dr Živoslav Tešić, Vice-Rector for Science, Innovation and Technology Transfer at the University of Belgrade.

The Great Charter for contribution in the field of education and development of architectural discipline was awarded to the distinguished professor, Dr Branislav Milenković, who has devoted his working life to the architectural school, and has contributed to set up and then develop a course of postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Architecture.

Honorary diplomas were awarded individually to the most successful graduates from various study programs:
– Nikola Biševac at the Undergraduate studies of Architecture,
– Jovana Jelisavac at the the Master studies of Architecture,
– Jelena Slović the Master studies of Integrated urban planning,
– Otašević Milica at Master studies of Interior Architecture.

The Ceremony closed with the presentation of a new publication by the Faculty of Architecture entitled “170 Personalities For 170 Years Of Higher Education In The Field Of Architecture in Serbia“. This book was created with the intention to present 170 personalities, and creators, who were educated at or contributed to the development of education in the field of architecture and urbanism at the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade and left great achievements behind them.
This publication marks the start of an important process of archiving personalities, data and results that have created and maintained this profession in Serbia. It is backed by the editors Prof. Zoran Lazović and Prof. Dr Vladimir Mako, as well as a whole team of young researchers at the Faculty.

The Faculty of Architecture has traditionally been a living and dynamic institution. With over 1,000 students and several different study programs at all academic levels , the Ceremony not only marks the 170th birthday of this institution, but also the ambition to use it as a basis for reflection on future steps and challenges.
This anniversary is not only a celebration, but also an important point on the continuous path to the development of a profession, its discipline and education. By acknowledging this great landmark, the Faculty of Architecture now has a great responsibility and obligation to preserve the achievements of previous generations and provide further development and improvement of education for the future.
