Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade, Faculty of Civil Engineering in Belgrade and Association Milutin Milanković are inviting You to participate in the First International Conference: “The Life and Work of Milutin Milanković: Past, Present, Future”. The conference should serve as a forum where experts from different scientific fields have the opportunity to present the results of their scientific work and get acquainted with other researches in the proposed field, connected through a common theme – the life and work of Milutin Milanković.

Milutin-Milankovic-1879-1958

Milutin Milanković 1879-1958

Summary

Milutin Milanković was a civil engineer by education and university professor of celestial mechanics by profession. He worked very successfully in various scientific disciplines and fields. Building and construction mechanics, astronomical theory of climate change, reform of the calendar, popular scientific work and history of natural sciences, are just some of the fields where Milanković’s scientific thought was reflected.

Although he marked the science of the twentieth century with scientific and architectural works and indebted world civilization, many details of Milutin Milanković’s life and work are insufficiently or completely unknown to science, as well as to the general public. This may be the reason why there is still no museum, research center or permanent event dedicated to him. Traces of his scientific work, together with the information about his personality, can still be found in archives, museums and libraries in cities where he lived and worked (Dalj, Osijek, Vienna, Belgrade, Budapest).

In Serbia, but also all over the world, very few scientific conferences were held dedicated to Milutin Milanković. The first scientific conference devoted to Milutin Milanković’s life and work was held in 1989, organized by the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU), more than twenty years after his death, and it was dedicated to the celebration of 100 years since his birth. The following events organized by SANU (2004, 2009, 2014, and 2017) on the occasion of Milanković’s anniversaries were international meetings with specific topics, mainly in the field of climate change.

In the meantime, several scientific meetings were held, where the works from certain fields of Milanković’s activities (geophysics, construction, calendar issues, literary opus) were presented. It is especially important to distinguish a scientific conference ‘‘Milanković and Climate’’, which was organized from 30th November to 4th December 1982. The organizer was Geological Observatory Lamont-Doherty of Columbia University, Palisades, New York 10984.

The Ambition Of The Conference

The main objective of the conference is to provide a more comprehensive insight into all contribution to the world of science by presenting works from all the fields in which Milanković worked and created, as well as to recall his activities as a civil engineer, reformer of the calendar, historian of natural sciences and chronicler of the scientific events of his time. The purpose is to cover his work, from the University and Academy of Belgrade, to the astronomical theory of climate change, which explained the mystery of the ice age and predicted climate change on Planet Earth.
