Dr Marija Maruna (1968) is Full Professor at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture. She graduated from the same Faculty (1995) with a thesis titled Razvoj i remodelacija urbanih modula Novog Sada: naseljske matrice, gradskog bloka, ulice i kućišta [Development and remodelling of the urban modules of Novi Sad: Neighbourhood matrix, city block, street, and house plot]. She also received her MSc from the Faculty of Architecture (2003) with the thesis Istraživanje mogućnosti strukturalne metode u otkrivanju i definisanju prostornih obrazaca grada (na primeru Novog Sada u periodu od kraja XVII do polovine XX veka) [Exploring the possibilities of the structural method in uncovering and defining spatial patterns of the city (using the example of Novi Sad from the late 17th to the mid-20th centuries], and a PhD from the same institution (2009) with the dissertation Primena metodologije Unified Process-a u urbanističkom planiranju [Application of Unified Process methodology in urban planning]. Her bachelor’s thesis won the first prize from the Novi Sad Society of Architects, and her doctoral dissertation was awarded the first prize by the City of Belgrade Chamber of Commerce.

 

She has over 25 years of teaching experience, and has mentored many master’s and specialist theses and doctoral dissertations, many of whom are awarded. As a member of several committees, she has participated in the defence of several international doctoral dissertations. Marija has participated at ETH Zurich, Politecnico di Milano, TU Berlin, TU Wien, TU Stuttgart, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, Universidad de Granada and Università degli Studi di Sassari as a visiting professor. As mentor, she has taken part in numerous student competitions, exhibitions, workshops, and summer schools. She is one of the founders and the first head of the Integrated Urbanism master’s programme, and currently heads the doctoral studies programme.

 

She has participated in multiple national and international scientific and research projects, and has published papers in monographs and journals issued by Elsevier, Springer, IGI Global, Emerald, MDPI, etc. She has authored numerous papers in monographs, journals, and conference proceedings of international and national importance. She is a member of the Inter – University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP) and academic associations Asociation of European Schools of Planning (AESOP), International Academic Association on Planning, Law and Property Rights (PLPR) and Associazione Italiani e Serbi Scienziati e Studiosi (AIS3).

 

She is the author of the books Teorija planiranja: prilog kritičkom mišljenju u arhitekturi [Planning theory: A contribution to critical thinking in architecture] (2019), Urbanizam Beograda: priručnik za istraživanje procesa proizvodnje prostora [Urban planning of Belgrade: A manual for researching the process of producing space] (2013)second prize at the 22nd Salon of Urbanism, co-author of the Strateški urbani dizajn i kulturna raznolikost [Strategic urban design and cultural diversity] (2009) (with N. Lazarević Bajec) and co-editor of the Inovativni metodološki pristup izradi master rada [Innovative methodological approach to developing master’s works] (2015) (with R. Čolić) – special award at the 24th Salon of Urbanism. She has also co-authored three publications of final works of students of the Integrated Urbanism master’s programme: Integralni urbani projekti za razvoj centra Kragujevca [Integrated urban projects for Kragujevac inner city development] (2014) (with R. Čolić), Integralni urbani projekti za upravljanje rizikom od poplava na primeru Obrenovca [Integrated urban projects for disaster risk management: Case study of Obrenovac] (2015) (with R. Čolić, D. Milovanović Rodić, and K. Lalović) – special award at the 24th Salon of Urbanism), and Instrumenti upravljanja integralnim urbanim razvojem na primeru grada Pančeva [Integrated urban governance instruments: Case study of the City of Pančevo] (2016) (with D. Milovanović Rodić and R. Čolić) – first prize at the 7th Salon of Landscape Architecture for all three publications.

 

She has been professionally involved in the development of several national strategic plans, urban plans, urban projects, studies, and technical projects. She is the winner of multiple awards at urban planning and design competitions and exhibitions.

 

She is a member of the editorial board of the leading national journal Arhitektura i urbanizam. She was the guest editor of the journal of national importance SAJ Serbian Architectural Journal, member of the editorial board of the national professional journal DANS, member of the Commission for the Urban Competitions of Serbian Town Planners’ Association, and member of the Presidency of the Belgrade Town Planners’ Association. She is a member of the Serbian Town Planners’ Association and Belgrade Engineers Association. She is the winner of the Charter on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Association of Engineers and Technicians of Serbia.

 

Dr. Marija Maruna is the head of the Laboratory for the Planning Culture and Spatial Policies Design (LPCSPD) at the Center for Research (CR) of the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture.
