In applying for admission, international and domestic students follow essentially the same procedures. The admissions procedure ensures that applicants fulfill the necessary requirements to study at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Belgrade. To be admitted into doctoral studies, you must fulfil both the general and specific¹ entry requirements and you must be assessed as having the ability to assimilate knowledge provided by the program.

¹ The general conditions for admission to doctoral studies are stipulated by the Higher Education Act, the Statute of the University of Belgrade and the overall legal acts of the University of Belgrade, with the details elaborated in the Doctoral Studies Guide of the Faculty of Architecture and the accreditation documentation of the study program.

General entry requirements

The general entry requirements for doctoral-level education at the University of Belgrade are:

  1. a completed degree at the Master’s (second-cycle) level,
  2. at least 300 ECTS, or
  3. generally equivalent knowledge acquired by other means, within or outside Serbia.

Application in 2 steps

STEP 1. Submission of the first round documents:

The submission of the first round documents serves to check the general eligibility, i.e. to check the authenticity of the documents, make sure that the application contains all the requisite documents and that the applicant fulfils the admission requirements. Incomplete or ineligible applications can be rejected at this stage.

Apply by filling out the APPLICATION FORM and attach the required attachments in PDF form.

Read the information regarding eligibility to apply, application process as well as required documents carefully before submitting an application.

APPLICATION FORM:
  • On the application form you will be asked to fill in the personal contact information and your educational background, so please follow the given instructions.
  • E-mail will be used for contacting you during the selection process. It is very important that you use an e-mail address that is valid through the entire selection process.
  • Do not write anything else on the fields except what is asked.
  • Write your name as it is written on your passport. Use capital initials (Firstname Lastname).
  • The information you give will be printed on the letter of acceptance exactly the way you write it on the application form.

APPLICATION FORM DOWNLOAD

REQUIRED APPLICATION DOCUMENTS: 1. Degree certificates from each university attended, including official register lists of study courses taken for the degree (transcripts of records).

In order not to submit two sets of documents, for this stage are acceptable scans of original documents. If the document has any elements that are in colour (stamps, text, signatures etc.) then please scan it in colour. Remember to include all pages of documents that contain any type of text/writing, even if it’s on a back page. Be sure that everything in the document is visible on the scan.

All documents must be in English. If the original document is in a different language, it must be officially translated in English by an authorised translator. Note that you will need to submit officially certified copies of the original documents and/or official translations for the recognition of foreign higher education documents and submission of full application stage.


2. Motivation letter, including brief description of the field of research interested in and research plan.

Please remember that the structure of the motivation letter is free, but here are some suggestions intending to help you. The first part should be laid down as a standard motivation letter providing some relevant and interesting insights about your intellectual personality and how your academic/professional background equips you for doctoral studies (what is your understanding of the general subject area).

It is followed by the brief description of the research area which should provide an overview of the proposed research explaining the rationale and its original contribution and how it relates to the general area of study, followed with the previous research experience in this field and a list of the most important literature titles. You are also advised to include previous Suggested length in total is 1500 words.


3. Copy of passport.


4. Proof of payment of the application fee (50 €).

Payment must accompany the application.

Before you submit your application, read the application form through again and make sure all information you provided is correct and that you have attached all the necessary attachments.

When you are ready to submit your application form, print out and sign the application form and send the scan with the attachments to: doctoral.school@arh.bg.ac.rs (Subject: 1st ROUND APPLICATION).

Applications which do not contain all documents deemed necessary will not be handled.

The applications received in this stage of application proceed to the Recognition of Foreign Higher Education Documents for the Purpose of Further Education for the submission of full application.

STEP 2. Submission of the full application and Recognition of foreign higher education documents for the purpose of further education:

Recognition of foreign higher education documents for the purpose of further education is a procedure which grants the document holder the right to continue education at the University of Belgrade. Completed recognition process is an admitting precondition and a step within the full application submission.

EDUCATION DEGREE:

  • Request form (will be provided).
  • Two certified photocopies of degree certificates from each university attended, including diploma supplement and/or official register lists of study courses taken for the degree (transcripts of records).
  • Two copies of official translation of the degree certificates and accompanying documents into the English language, certified by an authorized translator.
  • Two certified copies of a decision by the authorized body on name and/or surname change for persons who have changed their name and/or surname.
  • Proof of payment of procedure expenses (130 €).

Payment must accompany the application.

FULL APPLICATION DOCUMENTS:
  1. Original signed application form;
  2. Copy of the proof of citizenship;
  3. Curriculum Vitae (CV);
  4. A minimum of two letters of recommendation;
  5. Proof of English language skills (accepted in Europe).

You are advised to notify us be e-mail to doctoral.school@arh.bg.ac.rs that you have submitted a full application.

The full application and exam report are to be assessed by the Doctoral Programme Committee for the final decision on admission or rejection.

Important notices:

Please keep in mind that the procedure of the Recognition of Foreign Higher Education Documents lasts 2-6 months so organize your application timely.

CHANGES:
If your contact information changes during the application period or selection process, please send a notification e-mail to doctoral.school@arh.bg.ac.rs.
COPIES: DEGREE AWARDED BY A HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION OUTSIDE SERBIA:
The copies of study certificates must be certified by the issuing institution or by a notary public. The copies must be made of the original, official documents. Copies of copies will not be accepted. If the certificate has several pages, each page must be certified separately and indicate clearly the date and the original signature, printed name and stamp of the certifying officer. The mere mention of the official copy (eg. stamp “True copy”) is not enough.

All documents must be in English. If the original document is in a different language, it must be officially translated in English by an authorised translator. Copies of academic documents and their translations must be certified as authentic by a notary or a university official from your university. The translated documents you send to us should be the original official translations or their officially certified copies.

Note that you will need to submit both officially certified copies of the original documents in their original language as well as the official translations.

The copy of the passport and proof of citizenship do not need to be officially attested.

APPLYING WITH AN INCOMPLETE DEGREE: You may apply for the doctoral studies even if the degree with which you are applying is incomplete, as long as you will graduate before starting your studies.

Applicants with an incomplete degree can attach a certificate of student status or a statement by the home university about the estimated time of graduation to their application documents. If you are not able to graduate or fail to deliver the degree certificate by the given deadline, the offered study place will be cancelled. The deadline will be given separately.

Please note to reserve enough time to complete all courses required for the degree and for the administrative processes at their home institution.

If you have submitted the application already and then notice you have made a mistake, send an e-mail to doctoral.school@arh.bg.ac.rs and request for your application to be corrected. Note that you will need to submit the application again after you are done modifying the information.
